If you’ve been debating whether to take motorcycle lessons, then look no further than North London Motorcycle Training.
We’re based in Edgware and have over 40 years experience with motorcycle training. We have a dedicated team of friendly instructors to help you pass your CBT, DAS and much more!
Before you move forward, we recommend you give us a call on 020 8952 9622 to discuss the courses available. But first, read this blog post to get an idea on what each course has to offer!
Essential First Steps to Begin Your Motorcycle Training Journey
If you have no clue on where to start, the first step is to apply for your provisional motorcycle licence.
You’re finally a provisional motorcycle licence holder – hooray! The next step is to book your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training).
You can take your CBT from the age of 16, and can also only ride a 50cc motorbike! You must display a learner plate. Once you turn 17, you can ride a 125cc motorbike, as well as displaying a learner plate.
What a CBT course entails
Great, you’re now booked in for a CBT at North London Motorcycle Training!
When you arrive, our instructor will discuss your previous experience and what you want to achieve from motorcycle riding. We will check that you have your provisional motorbike licence and a simple eyesight test. You will be asked to read a number plate at 20.5 metres.
The CBT test involves motorcycle theory, practical training at our dedicated CBT training centre, practical riding skills at the CBT training centre and practical riding on road.
Do not worry though, as each stage takes as long as it takes for you to be comfortable and confident on the roads! Your instructor will guide you each step of the way.
The final on road practice riding has a compulsory minimum duration of four hours.
What a DAS entails
Brilliant – you’ve successfully completed your CBT and got your certificate (look out for your photo on our Facebook page). You’re now ready to embark on the DAS (Direct Access Scheme) to get your full motorcycle licence.
First things first, you are a minimum of 24 years old. And once you’ve completed it you will have no restriction on the size of machine you can ride.
Our Direct Access courses range from 3 to 5 day modules depending on your ability. We recommend you take a FREE rider assessment so that we can accurately advise on which module length would suit you best.
To achieve a motorcycle licence you will need to pass the Direct Access Test which consists of two modules.
Module 1:
Module 1 is about control. You must demonstrate good control of the bike in a variety of conditions. At North London Motorcycle Training we have full exclusive use of a 300 sq meter site where we are able to complete all the mandatory exercises at the required speeds. On weekends we also have access to the DVSA exam site, so you’re able to practice on tarmac, where you will take your exam.
Module 2:
Once you have demonstrated full control of the bike, you need to learn how to ride the bike safely in a variety of road conditions. We will practice riding on roads, roundabouts, junctions and dual carriageways to allow you to experience the London roads in all conditions. To ensure you are fully prepared for the motorcycle driving test we will also take you to the motorbike test centre area where you can practice in the same conditions as you would when taking your bike test.
Module 2 will last approx 40 minutes.
What else we have to offer
If you’re not quite ready to take on the CBT course, we have a ITM (Introduction to Motorcycling) course. If you have never ridden a motorbike previously or are a complete novice to motorcycling but comfortable on two wheels the ITM course is perfect for you.
We also have a Gear Conversion course – a 2 hour session completed after the CBT, to learn how to ride a manual 125cc motorcycle with gears.
As well as those courses, we have a Pre-Test Refresher. If you have your Module 1 or 2 coming up and need training to gain more confidence, then this session will help. Module 1 training starts from our off road site. Module 2 training is on road for a full 2 full hours.
And last but by no means least, we have the ERS (Enhanced/Advanced Rider Scheme).
Our Advanced riding course offers you a tailor-made route to continuous self-improvement, by working closely with a DVSA approved instructor.
The goal will be to help you build on your strengths and hone your skills on the road, so that you get even more from your riding.
Together we will work to identify and achieve your goals. The focus will be on you and what you need to get out of the course.
So that’s what our motorcycle training centre has to offer here at North London Motorcycle Training! We recommend you give us a call on 020 8952 9622 to discuss the courses available and when would be a good time and date to fit you in!
